Born in Switzerland, the son of Protestant minister Elie Allégret, Marc Allégret would become one of the first great directors of sound cinema in France. From a very young age, Allégret became a protégé of André Gide, who was a friend of his fathers. Gide served as mentor and guide to Allégret, and in fact, it has often been said although this is not true that Allégret was Gides nephew. Marc often traveled with Gide, including on his famous trip to Africa in the late 1920s the trip is inscribed into Gides writing, most notably in Les Faux monnayeurs. It was these travels that would inspire Allégrets first films, a series of travel documentaries, the most famous of which is titled Voyage au Congo 1927. Presumably, these documentaries gave Allégret a taste of what was to come, and he began his career in cinema. Allégret initially spent time codirecting and working with other directors, most notably silent-film director Robert Florey. The two made several films together, most notably Le Blanc et le noir, a film adaptation of a play by Sacha Guitry about a black baby born of adultery who is switched with a white baby. The film was a success, and it set the tone for Allégrets career. Moreover, many of the themes in Le Blanc et le noirrace relations, love, and betrayalwould recur in Allégrets later films, such as Zou-zou 1934, starring Josephine Baker. La Meilleure bobonne 1930, codirected with Claude Heymann, inaugurated another career of sorts for Allégret, for it featured a young actor named Fernandel, whose long career in film Allégret would launch. Besides Fernandel, Allégret would go on to discover Raïmu, Brigitte Bardot, Roger Vadim, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Jean-Louis Barrault, Odette Joyeux, Danièle Delorme, Alain Delon, and Jean-Paul Belmondo, among others. In fact, he is considered one of the foremost talent scouts of his time. In 1931, with the help of film producer Pierre Braunberger, Allégret made his first solo feature films, Mamzelle Nitouche and La Petite Chocolatière. Both were commercially and critically successful melodramas that cemented Allegrets reputation as a filmmaker. Mamzelle Nitouche also marked the beginning of a series of directorial collaborations between Allégret and his brother, Yves. Following Mamzelle Nitouche, Allégret made Fanny 1932, an adaptation of Marcel Pagnols play of the same title, which introduced Les pré-inscriptions pour chaque rentrée scolaire en écoles maternelle et élémentaire se dérouleront chaque année du 1er novembre au 1er février. More recently, Moreau appeared in François Ozons Le Temps qui reste 2005 and Serbian director Ahmed Imamovics Go West 2005. She is expected to appear in Zoe R. Cassavetess film Broken English, scheduled for release in 2007. Moreau was awarded a Career Golden Lion at Venice in 1992, an honorary César for her lifes work in 1995, an honorary Golden Berlin Bear in 2000, and an honorary Golden Palm at Cannes in 2003. She has performed in over one hundred films. MORGAN, MICHÈLE 1920 Actress. Born Simone Roussel near Paris, Michèle Morgan aspired to become an actress from an early age. She studied drama with René Simon in Paris and found bit parts in films. Among her early and largely uncredited roles were parts in René Guissarts Une fille à papa 1935, Yvan Noés Mademoiselle Mozart 1935 and Gigolette 1936, Léonide Moguys Le Mioche 1936, and Robert Siodomaks La Vie parisienne 1936. Morgans big break came in 1937, when Marc Allegret cast her opposite Raïmu in his film Gribouille 1937. Her reputation was cemented the following year when she starred opposite Jean Gabin in Marcel Carnés Le Quai de brumes 1938. The film has long been considered one of her best and best known. With these two films, in particular, Morgan, a classic beauty and a talented actress, became an international star, and she went on to become one of the great actresses of French cinema. Her film career ultimately spanned five decades. During the late 1930s and 1940s, Morgans star continued to rise. She appeared in many of the periods most significant films, including Allegrets Orage 1938, opposite Charles Boyer, Maurice Gleizes Le Récif de corail 1938, opposite Gabin, Jacques Feyders La Piste du nord 1939, Albert Valentins LEntraîneuse 1940, Georges Lacombes Les Musiciens du ciel 1940, opposite Michel Simon, Jean Grémillons Remorques 1941, again with Gabin, Julien Duviviers Untel père et fils 1943, alongside Raïmu and Louis Jouvet, and Jean Delannoys La Symphonie pastorale 1946 and Aux yeux du souvenir 1948, opposite Jean Marais. Morgan also went to Hollywood during this period; however, she was not able to command the respect in Hollywood films that she did in French films. She appeared in a handful of English-language roles codirected with Etienne Arnaud, and Le Rêve du cheval de fiacre 1909, codirected with Roméo Bosetti. He also continued to write screenplays during his time at Gaumont, as well as to direct animated sequences in live-action films. Some notable examples include Joyeux microbes 1909 and Le Peintre néo impressioniste 1910, both also directed by Cohl. He also pioneered, during his time at Gaumont, puppetry on film. Notable use of puppets as actors may be found in Les Allumettes animées 1908 and Le Tout petit Faust 1910. Cohl left Gaumont in 1910. He went, for a very brief time, to Pathé, where he made only two animated films. After being forced to make live-action films for the studio, Cohl again left and went to work for Éclipse Studios. While at Pathé, however, he made some important technical advances in animation. The films Cohl made at Éclipse have been lost, so it is not known exactly how long he was there or how many films he may have made. However, it is known that during the time he was working for Éclipse, he also began working for Éclair, and ultimately Éclair sent him to New Jersey to work. While at Éclair, Cohl worked most notably on an animated series titled the Newlyweds, which began running in 1913. He also made Les Allumettes ensorcelées. His other films have been lost. It is believed that while he was in France, others may have learned of Cohls animating techniques and patented them, thereby wrongly taking credit for the development of film animation. Cohl remained in the United States and directed films there until 1914, at which point he returned to France. From about 1916 to 1918, he worked independently with another illustrator, Benjamin Rabier, to produce an animated series titled Les Dessins animés de Benjamin Rabier. He also produced independently an animated series titled Les Aventures des Pieds Nickelés. There were four series of these produced, all released between 1917 and 1918. He also managed to produce one more Fantôche film independently in 1921, but the film was largely ignored. Cohl was financially devastated and alone his wife, Suzanne, had died in 1930, when, in 1937, he was severely burned by a gas lamp while drawing in his home. He was using a gas lamp because he could not afford to pay the electric bill. He died penniless in a charity hospital, all but forgotten. Jean Durand got his start, as did many of the film pioneers, in the café-concerts or music halls of Paris. In 1908, Georges Fagot introduced Durand to Charles Pathé, who was constantly recruiting talent from the Parisian stage for his studio, and Durand went to work very briefly at Pathé. He left Pathé for Société Lux, where he made more than forty films, most of which have been lost. In 1910, Gaumont hired Durand as a replacement for Roméo Bossetti, who had gone to Italy, and he was charged with directing the burlesque Calino series. Durand, it turns out, was a master of burlesque. He directed Calino from 1910 until 1913, turning out such titles as Calino cocher 1911, Calino médecin par amour 1911, Calino chef de gare 1912, and Calino et les deux candidats 1913. Durand went on to create two other very successful burlesque series for Gaumont, the Zigoto series, which ran in 1912, and the Onésime series, which ran from 1912 until 1915, including such titles as Onésime a un duel à laméricaine 1912, Onésime contre Onésime 1912, Onésime et la panthère de Calino 1913, Onésime se marie, Calino aussi 1913, and Onésime et le drame de famille 1914. Durands burlesque was extremely physical, even more so than Bosettis, and to that end he pioneered the use of stunt people as things were always getting broken and people hit. His influence was far-reaching in later burlesque and slapstick performances like the Keystone Cops or the Marx Brothers. In about 1910, Durand began working with the Wild West actordirector Joë Hamman. Some of these Westerns were episodes of his burlesque series. Examples are Calino veut être cowboy 1911 and Onésime sur le sentier de la guerre 1913. Others, such as Pendaison à Jefferson city 1911 and Le Railway de mort 1912, are newly created Westerns. These films, at Hammans suggestion, were shot in Frances Camargue region of France, which is somewhat reminiscent of some Wild West landscapes. The Camargue Western was one of the casualties of the war, but Durands influence may have ultimately led to the Spaghetti Westerns of later days. The famous and enormously popular Arizona Bill series, which ran from 1911 to 1913, and in which Hamman starred, is sometimes attributed to Durand. However, there is evidence that five of the episodes were directed by 78600-Maisons-Laffitte-Accueil ASTI-1 bis rue Solférino-01 39 14 77 86 Dimanche 15 décembre, de 11h00 à 19h00, salle France Gall Aux Fougères à Villefontaine, salon familial spécial fêtes de Noel.
